Industry Calls For Locations Crew

With funding from ScreenSkills’ Film Skills Fund, Sgil Cymru will plug the locations crew skill gap by training 12 film professionals on an intense two-week course, led by highly-experienced Location Manager Lowri Thomas.

Lowri Thomas said:

There is currently a real shortage of Location Management crew, in particular, Unit Managers and Location Assistants. This course will allow you to move on to your chosen role having learnt about where the locations department fits into a production: gaining permissions, contracting locations and unit bases, dealing with film offices, the local councils and the police. You will learn about sharing images, budgeting, sourcing unit bases and how to work out the production’s security requirements, through covering the required paperwork, practical workshops, guest speakers and the opportunity to visit the sets of productions filming locally.

In addition to Lowri’s expertise, the course will be delivered in collaboration with highly-experienced guest speakers who have worked their way up the ranks in the locations department. Guest speakers on Sgil Cymru’s 2017 Location Manager course included Location Managers Finlay Bradbury (Spectre, Wonder Woman, The Dark Knight) and Gareth Skelding (His Dark Materials, Sherlock, Da Vinci’s Demons).

The Sgil Cymru course will give aspiring location managers an in-depth insight into how the whole department functions, enabling them to hit the ground running when joining a location team on a project.

Location Managing is a terrific job, it’s exciting and varied but there is so much more to it than scouting and securing the right location. On this two-week course, participants will be taken through the whole process from the initial reading of the script or brief to clear-up and reinstatement on wrap.

Are you interested in becoming a Location Manager but don’t know where to start? With this two-week intense course, you’ll learn from the experts, everything from scouting to shooting. Click here for more information and to apply. Deadline for applications close on Monday 21st of January 2019.
